Insulated Concrete Formwork

Overview

lnsulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) “blocks” are composed of two main components: two sheets of EPS foam connected by polypropylene webs. The two sheets of EPS create the form that holds the concrete during placement. The polypropylene webs connect the two PS sheets and also support the rebar inserted during the forming process.

A completed ICF wall yields a fully insulated, ready to finish concrete wall. Essentially it takes care of the wall structure, insulation, vapor barrier and attachment for both interior and exterior finishes. Having all of these components completed during one phase means fewer contractors are needed and speeds up the construction process.

Energy Efficiency

Exterior ICF walls have been proven to increase the energy efficiency of working buildings. The average ICF home will require 44% less energy to heat and 32% less energy to cool. Due to the efficiency of the exterior shell the equipment required to heat and cool the home can be downsized, saving more money for the homeowner!

These heating and cooling estimates e based on a study of,  58 single-family homes across Canada and the US. One half of the studied homes were built of ICF the other half were constructed with standard wood frame neighbouring the ICF homes. The researchers compared the energy bills of each home, adjusting differences to ensure an apples-to-apples comparison.

Thermal Mass

The thermal mass of concrete allows the wall to smooth out large temperature swings. The walls of the house stay a little warmer when the outside temperatures fall to extreme cold. In the same regard as exterior temperatures rise the interior temperatures of the home will remain constant due to the thermal mass of the concrete.

In 2002 Kansas City experienced an ice storm resulting in 200,000 people losing power for up to one week. One ICF home lost power for 11 hours. With outside temperatures in the 20 °F range and significant winds, the interior temperature of the ho e dropped only 2 °F!

Cost Savings

Macleod’s decided to put real savings numbers in front of their
customers. A 3200 SF home plan was sent to the building consultant, Energy Wise Structures. Wood frame with an upgraded insulation package was compared to an ICF exterior structure for the home. Energy Wise guaranteed a monthly cost savings of $151.00. Factor in the extra cost of ICF in a monthly mortgage payment and the home owner still receives a monthly cost savings of $117.00 / month.

Each future homeowner has many options to consider when decided on the home of their dreams. Long before the finishing touches are questioned one simple question needs to be asked:” ICF construction … can I afford not to ?”
